TIRPIRTZ LOCATED
NEW GERMAN BATTLESHIP ATTACKED BY NAVAL PLANES OFF NORWAY. RETIREMENT UNDER COVER OF SMOKE SCREEN. LONDON, March 11. The 35,000 ton German battleship Tirpirtz was attacked by naval aircraft on Monday. This was announced in an Admiralty communique, which stated that as the result of reconnaissance it became known that the Tirpirtz had left Trondheim and was proceeding in a northerly direction up the coast of Norway. The battleship was later located and attacked by’naval torpedo-aircraft. It was not possible to obtain any details of the result of the attack, but when last seen, the Tirpirtz was retiring under cover of a heavy smoke screen towards the Norwegian coast. Our surface forces did not succeed in making contact with her, but any attack on our convoys was frustrated. Two of our aircraft are missing. The First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr A. V. Alexander, told the House of Commons that a very much more powerful and faster torpedo-bomber was now coming into active production.
