HORROR IN AMERICA
OVER JAPANESE OUTRAGES IN HONG KONG WRETCHED CONDITIONS OF PRIVATION. REPORTED IN PRISONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, March 10. The American public are horrorstricken at Mr Eden’s disclosures in the House of Commons. The Japanese Domei news agency stated today that “peace and order” are being “rapidly restored in all the occupied areas.” A message from Chungking says that Mr Vaughn Meisling, correspondent of the Associated Press of America, and two other Americans who were captured in Hong Kong, have been transferred to the island's Stanley Prison because they refused requests by the Japanese to sign a statement that they were being well treated. Recent arrivals in Chungking from Hong Kong said that wretched conditions of privation prevail at the prison, the daily fare being one bowl of rice and one bowl of watery soup. As a result of a refusal by the Japanese to make medical supplies available, many of the prisoners are suffering from dysentery. LITTLE INFORMATION ABOUT CASUALTIES * IN HONG KONG.
