HEAVY BOMBING

ENEMY BASES BLASTED IN NORTH AFRICA ENGAGEMENT IN DESERT. GERMAN FORCES REPELLED. LONDON, March 4. In Libya our columns successfully engaged enemy forces south of Timimi, and at other points enemy patrols were driven back by our artillery. Our bombers made a six-hour raid on Tripoli. Several ships were left blazing and fires were started in an oil depot, seaplane base, ship repair and engineering yards. Some of the fires blazed all day, and explosions occurred. Rome admits the severity of the raid and states that one ship was sunk and another damaged. Benghazi was also raided by the British bombers. All our planes returned.
