INCREASING APACE
AUSTRALIAN WAR COSTS TOTAL OF OVER £300,000,000 IN CURRENT YEAR. FIGURES RISING EVERY WEEK. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright! (Received This Day, 12.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The Federal Treasurer (Mr Chifley) stated that war expenditure in the financial year 1941-42 may exceed £300,000,000. The Minister said the results of the £35 000,000 Liberty Loan had been very satisfactory. “While Australia is becoming steadily a country of increasing military strength,” he added. “At the same time the cost, of the war to Australia is becoming increasingly great, When I brought down the Budget last November, we expected our war expenditure alone to be just over £220,000,000 in this financial year. In fact it may well be more than £300,000,000, and as each week passes the cost increases.”
