The Federal Treasurer (Mr Chifley) stated that war expenditure in the financial year 1941-42 may exceed £300,000,000. The Minister said the results of the £35 000,000 Liberty Loan had been very satisfactory. “While Australia is becoming steadily a country of increasing military strength,” he added. “At the same time the cost, of the war to Australia is becoming increasingly great, When I brought down the Budget last November, we expected our war expenditure alone to be just over £220,000,000 in this financial year. In fact it may well be more than £300,000,000, and as each week passes the cost increases.”
