RAM FAIR

FLOCK & STUD ROMNEYS BUYERS SHOW DISCRIMINATION. TOP PRICE 55 GUINEAS. Buyers showed keen discrimination in bidding only for the higher quality animals at the Masterton A. and P. Association’s annual ram fair, held at the Solway Showgrounds yesterday, when Romneys were offered. There was a large and representative bench. All quality lines .met with a keen demand, but those which did not appeal to buyers received scant or no attention. Top price yesterday for stud Romney rams was secured by a splendid type of animal, bred by Mr L. N. Hoggard, for which Mr R. Smith, Auckland, paid 55 gns. The quality of the offering was, in general, better than that at last year’s sale. Inspectors appointed by the Romney Breeders’ Association carried out good work in examining the flock rams’ qualities. Mr J. C. Bidwill’s offering was of a particularly high quality standard. His first run of 25 sheep realised up to 13-A gns., with an average of £9 15s. His second offering of 26 sheep, which were sold very late in the fair, was disposed of at prices up to 8 gns., the average being £7 2s 6d. The whole of the rams averaged £8 3s.
