PROTEST LODGED
LANSDOWNE SCHOOL COMMITTEE. IGNORED DURING RECENT NEGOTIATIONS. The Lansdowne School Committee wrote to the Wairarapa Hospital Board yesterday, protesting against the way in which negotiations regarding the taking-over of the Lansdowne School had been conducted, as the committee had received no communication from either the Wairarapa Hospital Board or the Education Department about the arrangements. The committee asked for an assurance that the school would not be taken over unless a major emergency arose through enemy action. The chairman of the Wairarapa Hospital Board, Mr H. H. Mawley, said the school would only be taken over in the case of an extreme emergency, not necessarily due to enemy action, but also in the event of an epidemic. It was explained that the board had been directed by the Health Department to approach the Wellington Education Board, and that it was the job o. the latter body to advise the committee. Members expressed regret that the school committee had been overlooked in the manner indicated and it was decided to write to the committee explaining the position.
