FIERCE FIGHTING
ON THE EASTERN FRONT DEEP SOVIET PENETRATION. INTO GERMAN FORTIFIED LINES. LONDON, February 18. The capture by the Russians of three more inhabited localities is reported in a special broadcast from Moscow. The Soviet forces wiped out 500 enemy
troops and destroyed considerable quantities of war material. Enemy counter-attacks have been smashed on the south-western front, in the Kharkov region and elsewhere in the Ukraine. The “Red Star” says that on various fronts the Russian troops have forced their way deeply into defensive lines which the enemy had fortified strongly and had hoped to hold until the spring. The Berlin radio reports many fierce Russian attacks on the central front. There were 13 in a few hours and fighting was particularly fierce between Rzhev and Viazma and 20 miles west of Mojaisk. On the north-west front. Russian cavalry are advancing many miles into the rear of the enemy and making a path for the main Soviet forces, which aim at the relief of Leningrad.
