AMERICAN PLANES
Now Operating Over Java ANOTHER AIR RAID ON SURABAYA LONDON, February 5. The first report of American Army planes operating over Java has come to hand. A small formation of American planes encountered a greatly superior force of Japanese fighters and bombers. One enemy bomber and one pursuit plane were shot down. The Americans lost one plane. Some damage was caused at Surabaya when new Japanese air attacks were made today. A communique states that Netherlands forces at Balik Papan have succeeded in cutting their way through the enemy troops and are now safe. It is officially stated from Batavia that when the Japanese landed at Tarakan they sent a message to the Dutch commander at Balik Patan stating that if oil and other installations were destroyed all those responsible would be wiped out without exception.
