SITUATION IN BURMA

Activity on Salween River Front BIG ENEMY FORCES BEING USED LONDON, February 5. A Rangoon military spokesman states that on the Salween River front the British and Japanese have been sending forward patrols. The Japanese have been particularly active at a point 25 miles north of Moulmein. It is thought that the Japanese are preparing to make the town a local centre. The situation, according to a Rangoon communique, is quiet. No damage or casualties were caused by an enemy attack last night on an aerodrome near Rangoon. The Rangoon correspondent of the “Daily Express’’ yes-, terday said that 100,000 Japanese were making the drive for Rangoon. No substantal brideghead had been made, but the Japanese were thrusting at six points along the Salween River. The enemy vanguards which crossed the river on February 2 hjtd been wiped out. It is learned in London today that the main fighting on the Salween River is at Paan, 25 miles north of Moulmein. The Japanese are expected to launch their main assault from here; In one attempt to cross the river an entire enemy column was wiped out.
