BOROUGH AFFAIRS
CARTERTON COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT. ENTERTAINMENT OF SOLDIERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, pre- ; sided over the monthly meeting of the i Carterton Borough Council held last evening. There were also present Crs. 5 E. McKenzie, W. A. Hart. H. Morten- ; sen, W. R. Harry, C. E. Stevens, C. J. ■ Delacey, L. M. Clark, Howard E. Jackl son and Miss O. W. Wolters. The treasurer's statement showed a i credit balance in the District Fund a/c. t of £5l, and in the Gasworks a/c of ! £734. ; Mr H. Knutson wrote applying for a . refund of the heavy traffic licence fee [ owing to the impressment of his lorry ; by the military authorities. —The re-| . quest was granted. [ Messrs Knutson and Jamieson, build- ; ers, reported that they had inspected . the Fire Brigade building and were of . opinion that it was reasonably safe [ against earthquake. —The report was ■ received and further action in the matI ter held over. ; The Public Trustee wrote asking for the installation of new pipes from the water main in Howard Street to the boundary of Croydon Hospital.—The request was agreed to. The Sanitary Inspector (Mr F. Ellett) reported that satisfactory conditions prevailed in the borough. The Mayor’s action in authorising the installation of six showers at the swimming baths was endorsed. Cr. H. Mortenson moved that when fresh tenders are called for the lease, of the Moreton Road reserve the term' be for a period of 21 years and that tenders be invited not less than five months prior to the termination of the lease. —The motion was seconded by Cr. Harry and carried. It was decided on the motion of Cr. Jackson, seconded by Cr. Stevens, that the Council bear half the cost of the telephone being connected' to Acting-Superintendent J.- L. Churchouse v s house in Garrison Street and to recommend the Fire Brigade to apply for a line from the Fire Station to the Superintendent’s residence, The Mayor moved that it be recommended to the meeting to be held in connection with the entertainment of soldiers that either the Bandroom or the State Theatre be made available to the Y.M.C.A., or any other body as a club room for the entertainment of soldiers while on leave in Carterton, I and that either be let free of charge, lighting and gas to be paid for. The motion was seconded by Cr. Hart and | carried. | Mr H. C. Ellett was appointed sanitary inspector for the borough. Cr. Mortensen was • appointed the Council’s delegate to the meeting to discuss the entertainment of soldiers, i Cr. DeLacey brought up the matter! of leaky gutters in business premises in the borough and moved that the In-| spector’s attention be drawn to the same. The motion was seconded by Cr. i FI. E. Jackson and carried. The Works Committee was requested to have the nuisance created by trees ; and shrubs overhanging the footpaths in the borough attended to. Cr. Jackson referred to the untidy state of the streets caused by paper and . other refuse being thrown on the footpaths and roads. He moved that six i wire'rubbish baskets be placed on the ; footpaths in the business area—The ; motion was carried. Mr F. Taplin, of the Carterton Ama-u te'ur Swimming Club, waited upon the j Council, asking to be granted permis- ' sion to use the baths on Saturday after- ( noons for the club’s competitions. Mr Taplin pointed out that, owing to “black ' out” restrictions, it would be impossible ] to hold competitions under electric light < conditions. The Council decided to ( grant the permission to hold sports each j Saturday between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., c provided events were put on for the j soldiers. The club is to be asked to ( make a donation to the Council. c
