MONTHLY SITTING

(“Times-Age” Special.) At (he monthly sitting of the Greytown Magistrates’ Court the following cases were dealt with:- —Desmond Joseph Berquish was fined 5s with costs 10s for having driven a motor-car without holding a licence. For having driven a motor-car across a railway crossing when the engine and carriages were within half a mile of the crossing he was fined. £5 with costs 10s.

Herbert Charles Dickens was bound over to keep the peace for 12 months. Phil Barney was charged with having assisted in procuring liquor for a native. He was fined £5 with costs 10s.

C. S. Nicholson (Transport Department) proceeded against Theodore Underwood for having exceeded a speed of 30 miles per hour with a motorcycle in a restricted area, and also for having exceeded the speed of 40 miles per hour with more than one passenger in other than a side-car. The inspector stated that for a considerable distance he did 55 miles per hour and could not catch up accused. When he eventually overtook the motor-cycle he found four persons riding on it. Accused was fined £3 with costs 10s on the first charge and £2 with costs 10s on the second charge. Thomas Farmer was charged with having been found on licensed premises after hours, and was fined £l, with costs 10s. Mitchell Brown was charged with having control of intoxicating liquor in the vicinity of a dance hall. He was fined £4 with costs 10s. Ivar Hood, on a similar charge, was fined £3, with costs 10s. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following cases: —J. F. Thompson and J. W. Tate v C. Rewi, claim £5 ss; H. M. Morgan v William Arthur, claim £5 2s Cd; C. W. Brown v William Arthur, claim £5 10s 6d. Personal. The engagement is announced of Dulcie Gwelfa, only daughter of Mr and Mrs E. H. Richards, Glengrove, Greytown, to John L. C. Samuels, only son of Mr and Mrs H. A. Samuels, Somerfield, Christchurch. TOWN HALL TONIGHT’S PROGRAMME. ‘ “Arizona,” a story of the west, will be shown tonight. The featured players are Jean Arthur, William Holden and Warren William. (Approved for universal exhibition.)
