WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a fair attendance at the monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute. The president, Mrs Spicer, presided. Mrs Atkinson demonstrated the working of a spinning wheel. Several members were keenly interested, and already some have made considerable progress in the art of spinning. Donations of wool have been given in order that the work of spinning may be carried out. A sum of 16s was raised for the purpose of defraying the cost of parcels for local soldiers overseas. A musical parcel competition was won by Miss Spicer. Mrs Atkinson was first and Mrs S. Mclntosh, second in a Christmas cake competition. The best bloom competition was won by Mrs Carter, with Mrs Scrimgeour second. The hostesses for the afternoon were Miss Scrimgeour and Mesdames Lovegrove and Atkinson. Personal Items. Mrs Judd, Pahiatua, has been staying with Mrs Priest, Haunui. Mrs J. Phillips, who has been staying with her daughter, Mrs Spicer, has returned to Wellington. Miss Bessie Sutton has returned from a holiday in Wellington. Mr and Mrs Smith,"Wellington, were the guests of Mrs Waiwera for a few days. Mrs W. Lovegrove, Auckland, has been the guest of Mrs Lovegrove. Mr and Mrs Sutherland, Wellington, are the guests of Mr and Mrs Gillies. Miss Lena Matenga, who is on the staff of the Otaki, Health Camp, is visiting her parents for a few days. Mr and Mrs Simpson were visitors here for a few days. Mr G. Te Whaiti has returned from Wellington. Shearing Operations. Shearing operations in this district are nearly completed. Good Win on Happy Ending. Local sporting enthusiasts who attended the race meeting at Trentham on Saturday, to a man invested solidly on the winner of the Wellington Cup, Happy Ending. The hopes of the Valley punters were shattered by the display of another candidate, owned locally, in a previous event, but the win of Mr McDougall’s horse in the Cup more than compensated for the failure of the other candidate. However, there is another race day, and the Valleyites will still be loyal to their first choice.
