ALLEGED MANSLAUGHTER
CHARGE AGAINST MAORI WOMAN. INFANT LEFT ON BEACH. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WHANGAREI, January 21. A Maori woman, Erina Paul, 20, pleaded not guilty in the Magistrates’ Court, Whangarei, to a charge of manslaughter in respect of a newly-born infant, on Decembei- 31. She was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. The evidence showed that accused gave birth to a child on the foreshore of Whangarei Harbour. She returned immediately, and undetected, to a house nearby, where she had stayed as a guest the previous night, her hosts being unaware of her condition. On January 3, a dog was found on the beach with the body of the infant, which it had obviously mangled. This led to inqtiiries by the police, to whom accused admitted having left the infant among the rushes. She did not know whether it was dead or alive. A medical witness expressed the opinion that the infant breathed, and that death was due to exposure and lack of necessary attention.
