ARCTIC CRICKET
GAME IN SPITSBERGEN. Spitsbergen has another claim to fame, says a British exchange. It is probably the land farthest north in which cricket has been played. Lord Sheffield, who in the nineties used to entertain our Australian visitors for their opening match, once visited the island and had among his guests Alfred Shaw, the old Nottinghamshire bowler, of whom it was said that he could pitch the ball on a sixpence. A game of cricket was played. Shaw bowled his lordly host, who, to commemorate the occasion, had the ball mounted and presented to the bowler.
