FEATHERSTON
SOLDIERS’ DANCE ENJOYABLE TIME SPENT. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Town Hall was a scene of gaiety on Saturday night when a dance was tendered to soldiers. The music was supplied by Udy's Orchestra. The floor space was taxed to the utmost, and for once the men outnumbered the women. During the supper interval extras were played by Miss Marjorie Tocker, L/Cpl. Whitefort and Pte. G. Sutherland. Pte. Sutherland contributed a much appreciated humorous item which was heartily applauded. Mr Peter Habib carried out his duties as M.C. in his usual capable manner. Those present thoroughly enjoyed themselves and are looking forward to the next one. The supper arrangements were in charge of a capable band of patriotic workers. Personal Items. Mrs R. F. Watson, of Fitzherbert Street, is visiting Lyall Bay. Miss Jean Houston, a members of the W.A.A.F. at Rongotai, visited her parents, Mr and Mrs W. J. Houston, Highlands, during the weekend. Mr and Mrs Sid Burt have returned to Wellington after a long visit to Featherston, where Mr Burt has been recuperating after his severe illness. Miss Maida Vercoe. of Wellington, was the weekend guest of Mrs W. H. Rowles. Mrs J. B. Ritchie, who has been the guest of Mrs A. C. Murphy, Homebush, has returned to Wellington. Mrs J. McEwen, of Wellington, who will be better known to local residents as Miss Ruth Durrad, was the guest of Miss Dorothy Bloxam for the weekend. Word has been received by Mr and Mrs F. S. Hayes that their son Roy, who has been missing for many months, is now reported to be a prisoner of war. Many citizens friends and Scouts gathered at the Railway Station on Saturday to bid farewell to Mr Denny Carlyon, who left to take up a position at Eltham, all present wishing him success and happiness in his new work. Mr Carlyon, it will be remembered, was one of the first of the local residents to answer the call to duty and left with the Ist Echelon. After serving in the Greece and Crete campaigns, he was invalided home. His health has improved considerably and he is now able to carry out light work. Prior to enlisting, and since his return, Mr Carlyon has taken an active interest in the Scout movement and has been a tower of strength to the organisation. Recreation Room Popular. The recreation room at the Town Hall was a popular place for the soldiers on Sunday afternoon, many gathering there for a well earned rest and light refreshments. The arrangements were in charge of the W.W.S.A. and the ladies present had an extremely busy time in seeing to their welfare. COSY THEATRE WEDNESDAY’S PROGRAMME. In addition to the usual evening session a special matinee will be held on Wednesday at 2.30 p.m. when “Torrid Zone,” with Pat O'Brien and James Cagney in the leading roles, will be featured. (Recommended by Censor for adults.)
