INDUSTRIAL CONCORD

DEMANDED IN UNITED STATES PROPOSAL BY MR LEWIS. ACCEPTED BY FEDERATION PRESIDENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.20 p.m.) WASHINGTON, January 18. The Secretary of Labour, Miss Perkins, in her annual report to Congress; warned trade unions that they will face Government regulations unless they adopt sound economic, social, political and moral practices and select leaders who can be trusted by the public, the Government and employers, as well as union members. She added that trade unionism was an established American institution and therefore accepted definite social responsibilities. Its policies must be based, not only upon the welfare of members, but also upon the welfare of all the people of the United States. In a surprising move, Mr J. L. Lewis, the founder and a former president of' the C. 1.0.., proposed a resumption of peace negotiations between the American Federation of Labour and the C. 1.0., expressing the belief that a unity effort would succeed under the existing wax- time conditions. Mr W. Green, President of the A.F.L., accepted the proposal immediately on behalf of his organisation.
