DESERT TRAINING
NEW ZEALAND TROOPS FORMER BATTLEFIELD BECOMES PARADE AREA. TROOPS RESTED & REFITTED. (N.Z.E.F. Official News Service.) WESTERN DESERT, January 15« New Zealand troops are marching with a brass band in the Western Desert. Where a few weeks ago our men rarely gathered in numbers even at mealtimes, today there are battalion parades. The whirlwind advance of the line in the main campaign; left well in the rear the area which was twice occupied by the New Zealanders as a key defence position. Now it has more the appearance of a training camp. White tents have been erected where before only the tops of camouflaged trucks, tents and dugouts showed above the ground. As a result of the recent heavy rains, areas that were dustbowls four months ago, are now encrusted parade grounds. Rested and refitted mfter their campaign, the troops have begun an extensive training programme—learning and practising for further success in the next encounter.
