FURTHER HEADWAY
MADE BY RUSSIANS PRESSURE ON THE ENEMY WEST OF MOSCOW. SUCCESSES IN OTHER AREAS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright ) LONDON, January 18. Fresh advances on several sectors of the Eastern front, after day and night fighting, are reported by the Russians, in the Kalinin area several populated places have been re-occupied. The enemy left over 1,000 dead on the battlefield.
An agency message says Hitler called on the German Air Force to try to check the Soviet advance on the Moscow and the Leningrad fronts. Masses of German fighters and divebombers were flung into the battle to meet the Russian thrust towards Mojaisk. In this thrust the Russians are reported to have reached a point 13 miles south-east of Mojaisk. Russian forces are also pressing forward from the east and the northern arm of the great pincer movement is likewise closing in.
The battle for Kharkov is still raging. The Germans mention the city for the first time, stating that the Russians are trying to pierce the city’s defences.
