FEATHERSTON
DRILL DEMONSTRATION EXCELLENT PRESENTATION. (“Times-Age” Special.) Members of the Red Cross Society and the Greytown classes journeyed to Martinborough last night for the purpose of obtaining information in connection with the forming of a section of a detachment. A splendid demonstration of drill was given by the Martinborough girls who paraded in full outdoor uniforms, looking very trim and neat. They made a truly fine spectacle as they went through the drill movements with ease and grace.
After the drill the visitors proceeded to the Red Cross Society's rooms where the girls demonstrated . their practical work. The pupils are indeed a great credit to their instructors who must have felt very proud of them. Quickness and efficiency appeared to be their objective and it was felt that the local girls had learned a great deal from the visit.
In order to stimulate enthusiasm, the Martinborough sub-centre has donated a beautiful challenge clock, to be competed for by the surrounding subcentres, in drill, first aid and home nursing. A detachment for this purpose will consist of six members from each centre. The competition is Ito commence in four months’ time, when it is hoped the girls will be ready for the test.
Supper concluded a most instructive and enjoyable gathering, and before departing Mrs G. S. Sharp, president of the local sub-centre, expressed on behalf of Featherston and Greytown, sincere thanks and appreciation for the helpful instruction and advice given by the Martinborough girls, who were indeed a great credit to the Red Cross organisation. They had set a very high standard in the V.A.D. world which would be an incentive to the local girls to work most wholeheartedly in the future.
