LATIN AMERICA
SEVERANCE OF RELATIONS WITH AXIS EXPECTATION OF UNITED STAND. WITH ONLY ARGENTINA DISSENTING. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.45 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 13. The New York “Herald-Tribune” says the United States will not ask for a joint declaration of war against the Axis Powers at the Foreign Ministers’ conference, opening atißio de Janeiro on Thursday, but will demand a complete severance of'political and economic relations between Latin America and the Axis. Nineteen republics are lined up in the United States camp. Chile, al j though fearful of Japanese attacks on her long and exposed coastline, is expected to co-operate, leaving Argentina in a lonely minority of one. For the first time in five years, the United States is so confident of its power and prestige that it will refuse any Argentine compromise. Informed circles believe that Argentina has already lost the struggle for Pan-American dominance.
