CARTERTON

RACING CLUB MEETING OF STEWARDS. (“Times-Age’’ Special.) ■ Mr W. Howard Booth presided over ■ a meeting of the Carterton Racing ' Club stewards held in the secretary's office last evening. There were also present: Messrs L. H. Smart, J. C. Harp, P. Bain, E. J. Matson, Geo. E. Allen, G. A. Vincent and R. G. Kemble. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Geo. Eaton. H. J. Brown, F. C. Yule, W. C. Deller and J. Johnson. The treasurer reported a bank overdraft of £B6B Is 9d. Receipts since the last meeting amounted to £B2 2s 9d. Accounts totalling £53 8s 2d were passed for payment. The New Zealand Racing Conference wrote stating that the holding of race meetings would only be granted for Saturdays and holidays and that a change of venue for race meetings would not be allowed. Petrol for the carriage of racehorses would not be available. It had also been decided by the conference that when an injury was suffered by a jockey, he be sent to the nearest hospital for treatment. The question of a defaulting owner was before the committee and after consideration it was resolved that the secretary write the owner in connection therewith. It was decided that the club’s stock at the Taratahi racecourse be sold at auction on Friday, January 16, as well as the hay that was being harvested. It was resolved that the secretary take out a war risk on the club’s buildings.

Home Spun Wool. An interesting exhibit of home-spun wool, the work of members of the Carterton Branch of the Women's Division. is on view in a window at the premises of Messrs Watson and Co. The wool is well spun and of excellent quality. It is intended to knit the wool into sweaters and sea boot stock- . ings for the Merchant Navy. Personal Items. The late Mrs A. Peters referred to in the obituary notice yesterday concerning Mrs W. Waterson, was the eldest daughter of the late Mrs Waterson (nee Wallbridge) and not her sister as stated. Miss Jean Smart, daughter of Mr and Mrs L. H. Smart, of the staff of the Napier Hospital, has passed her final State Nursing Examination Mr, and Mrs Geo. Steven and Mr and Mrs T. T. Hughes are spending a holiday at Paraparaumu. REGENT THEATRE TONIGHT’S PROGRAMME. “Penny Serenade” will be shown tonight. This picture, abounding with comedy and heart interest, features Irene Dunne and Cary Grant, who are,, again reunited in a hilarious comedy. (Recommended by the Censor for adults).
