TAKEN BV RUSSIANS SERIOUS THREAT TO GERMAN STRONGHOLDS. NO SHORTENED LINE AVAILABLE TO ENEMY. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This, Day, 1.20 p.m.) RUGBY, January 9. A Soviet communique states: “On January 9 our troops fought on various sectors of the front against enemy resistance and dealt heavy blows to the enemy. The towns of Mosalsk, Serpeisk and Detchino were occupied by our troops. On January 8, 29 enemy aircraft were shot down against the loss of five of our own. One enemy transport was sunk in the Barents Sea. These captures marked a notable advance squth-west of Moscow. Mosalsk
and Serpeisk are about 15 miles to the north-west and west of Meschchovsk, which was captured two days ago. The latest advance brings the southern Russian offensive in the central sector to 60 miles south-south-east of Viazma, thus increasing the outflanking threat to German strongholds at Mojaisk and Orel. It is pointed out in informed quarters in London that the Russian salient structure, 40 miles west of Kaluga, now extends well beyond any shortened line on which the Germans might have hoped to stand during the winter.
