NEW BRITAIN
RAIDED BY JAPANESE BOMBERS TWO ATTACKS ALSO MADE ON RABOUL. SOME CASUALTIES REPORTED. LONDON. January 4. Japanese bombers have raided New Britain, an island group to the east of New Guinea and made two attacks on Rabaul, in Papua. This news is (contained in a communique issued from Melbourne. The first attack on the Royal Australian Air Force at Rabaul was made at noon. Only a few bombs were dropped, but there were some casualties. After the attack the enemy aircraft dispersed over a wide area. The raiders probably came, from Japanese mandated territory, the Caroline Islands, 1000 miles to the north of New Guinea. Jhe second attack was made by eleven enemy planes. A number of bombs were dropped, but there were no casualties.
