DEFENDING TROOPS
LN THE PHILIPPINES CONSOLIDATED IN NEW POSITIONS. FIVE-HOUR AIR ATTACK ON CORREGIDOR. f (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, January 3. A Washington communique says: “There is a marked lessening of the enemy .ground attacks. The American and Filipino troops are consolidated in the new positions, where organised resistance to the Japanese attacks will be intensified. Enemy aeroplanes have been active over the region occupied by our ground forces.” It is also announced that 60 Japanese bombers maintained a five-hour attack on Corregidor. At least three were shot down. Thirteen Americans were killed and 35 were wounded, but there was no material damaged.
