Drunkenness Charge.
A statutory first offender, on a charge of drunkenness, was convicted and discharged by Mr E. M. Hodder, J.P., at Masterton this morning. Bowling Tourney Abandoned. The Wairarapa Bowling Centre’s New Year tournament, which commenced at the Masterton Club greens yesterday, has been abandoned on account of the wet weather. Territorial Appeals. The secretary of the Wairarapa Man Power Committee, Mr G. F. Whitlock, asks that if any men called up for Territorial service intend to appeal, no time should be lost in lodging applications, as it was intended to deal with all appeals immediately. Odd Fellows’ Dance. The Masonic Hall, Masterton, was packed to the doors last night for the Odd Fellows’ Lodge dance. The music was supplied by Barnes’s Orchestra. Bro B. J. Seddon was M.C. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss J. Grantham and Mr R. Madsen. Supper was served by a committee under the direction of Sister T. Rickards. Scarcity of Potatoes. The shortage of potatoes in Auckland reached an acute stage yesterday, when practically all greengrocers were without supplies. Many shops exhausted their stocks on New Year’s Eve, and most of the others sold the last of their supplies early today. In view of a statement of the Food Controller that steps had been taken to allocate market stocks between the defence forces and the public, many shopkeepers attended the city markets yesterday in the hope of replenishing supplies. Only one firm, however, received a consignment, and it was inadequate to meet the demand. After reservations had been made for shipping and hotels, the balance was requisitioned by the defence forces. No supplies were available for retailers and the public.
