KILLED IN ACTION
SERGEANT RONALD DEVINE. FORMER MASTERTON RESIDENT. Sergeant Ronald R. Devine, Napier, who has been reported killed in action in the Middle East, was formerly a well known and highly respected resident of Mastertdn, where he was employed by Messrs Bullick-Black-more, Ltd. The late Sergeant Devine was a son of Constable and Mrs J. Devine, formerly of Masterton. He was a well known athlete, footballer and cricketer. With his brother, Merv Devine, his father, Constable J. Devine, and his uncle, Constable W. Devine, he played for piany years for the Red Star Football Club, . captaining the senior team on numerous occasions. All the members of the Devine family represented Wairarapa on the football field. Sergeant Ron Devine played for several- for the Wairarapa senior football team and captained it on more than one occasion. He also played cricket with the Red Star Cricket Club. Several years ago he was transferred to the Hastings branch of the firm of Messrs Bullick-Black-more, Ltd. While residing in Hastings he played for some seasons for the Hawke’s Bay senior football representatives and acted as captain on many occasions. While in Masterton he was closely associated with social activities of the Red Star Football Club, and took a leading part in organising the numerous dances and socials which the club held. He was one of the most brilliant five-eighths ever seen in the Wellington province, being a heady player, a strong runnerand very sound on defence. Possessing a genial nature he was very popular with a host of friends who will deeply regret his death. His wife resides in Napier.
