Eight men were arrested on charges connected with alleged bookmaking, and appeared later at a special Court sitting. All were remanded.
Shooting Accident. Alexander Henry Straight, aged 49, single, butcher at Wainihinihi, was injured when returning from deerstalking on Thursday. He was walking a few paces ahead of a companion, a lad of 17, who slipped, causing a rifle he was carrying to discharge a bullet, which entered Straight’s head by the right ear. Straight is in hospital in a serious condition.
Boys’ Camp Abandoned. Because of the continued rough weather the Y.M.C.A. boys’ camp at Kai Iwi Beach, nine miles north of Wanganui, has been abandoned. Tents had been blown down and damaged to such an extent that there was no alternative, said Mr A. L. Rounthwaite, the Y.M.C.A. secretary who was in charge of the camp. He added that there had been only one fine day in the six the boys had been at Kai Iwi. Garden Pests Scarce.
It is many years since the Wairarapa has been so free at this period of two destructive garden and crop pests, the white butterfly and the diamond back moth. A Masterton resident, drawing attention to this position, said usually it was necessary at this time of the year to spray cabbages at least twice a week, whereas this season he had so far only sprayed them once. He attributed the position to the unfavourable weather experienced recently.
Y.M.C.A. Secretaries Missing. Information has been received by headquarters of the New Zealand Y.M.C.A. in Wellington that several more secretaries serving with the N.Z.E.F. in the Middle East are not yet accounted for. It is known for certain that Mr A. J. Pritchard, Palmerston North, and Mr Gordon Riddell, Auckland, are missing. Mr Riddell enlisted in the N.Z.E.F. and was transferred to the Y.M.C.A. in the Middle East. Mr Pritchard left New Zealand with the troops early last year. Private Colin F. Thompson, Auckland, who was seconded to the Y.M.C.A. for duty as a driver, is also reported missing. Very little news has yet been received from the four secretaries taken prisoner in Greece and Crete. (
