DRAMATIC ESCAPE
MADE FROM HONG KONG BRITISH & CHINESE PARTY. SAFETY REACHED IN SPEED BOATS. (Received This Day, 10.20 a.m.) RUGBY, January 1. Details of the dramatic escape from Hong Kong on Christmas Day of a party of Britons and Chinese, led by the one-legged Chinese, Vice-Admiral Chang, has been broadcast by the Chungking radio. Both the admiral and a Scot named MacDougall were wounded, but thanks to an expert swimmer they managed to keep afloat. After swimming for two hours they reached a : small island, where they were rescued by a speedboat belonging to another party. On Boxing Day the survivors arrived at Namo, on the eastern corner of Mirs Bay, where they hurriedly destroyed their remaining speed-boats in order to leave no trace.
The radio stated that the party succeeded in beating off an attack by the Japanese, several enemy vessels being sunk.
