ANOTHER RAID

MADE ON THE LOFOTEN ISLANDS ENEMY COMMUNICATIONS DISRUPTED. SUCCESSFUL COMBINED OPERATIONS. LONDON, January 1. For the second lime in a week, British forces have carried out successful operalions against the enemy on 1 lie Norwegian coast. Following on the brilliant raid on Vaalsund, the Admiralty reports that another highly successful attack has been made, this time on the Lofoten Islands, off northern Norway. Our ships returned undamaged, having played havoc with the enemy’s sea communications in that region. The combined British force engaged included commandos, and Norwegian and Polish units took part in the operations. An Admiralty communique states that light naval forces commanded by Rear-Admiral L. H. K. Hamilton, D. 5.0., have returned from operations lasting for several days against the Lofoten Islands. Our ships used one of the harbours as a fuelling base during the operations and though the port was repeatedly reconnoitred by enemy aircraft, we suffered no losses or casualties and our ships returned undamaged. An enemy aircraft was shot down and a German patrol vessel was also destroyed. A landing force commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel Harrison, M.P., R.A., captured some German prisoners and also several Quislings. A number of Norwegians, with their families, availed themselves of the opportunity to go to Great Britain. A special correspondent with the British forces, describing the raid, reported that Rear-Admiral Hamilton’s message to those taking part stated that the forces had achieved their object in bringing shipping to a standstill. About 100 Norwegian men and women seized the .opportunity to proceed to Britain.
