NEW YEAR’S EVE

CELEBRATION IN MASTERTON. j QUIETER THAN ON FORMER OCCASIONS. Between 200 and 300 people assembled at the Masterton Post Office corner at midnight on New Year’s Eve to celebrate the passing of the old year and the beginning of the new. Wet weather accounted for the attendance being smaller than usual and no doubt contributed to the celebration being much quieter than on former occasions. Members of the Masterton Municipal Band and of the Pipe Band assembled at the Post Office and participated in the closing scenes marking the end of 1941. The crowd joined hands and sang “Auld Lang Syne,” with band accompaniment. In many parts of the town there was little indication that 1941 was passing on and 1942 coming in. As is usually the case, a few instances were reported of gates having been removed from their hinges.
