FOUR MEN KILLED
SEVERAL OTHERS INJURED ACCIDENT ON NAVAL SHIP. INQUEST OPENED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The loss of four lives as the result of an accident which occurred on Tuesday on one of the H.M.N.Z. ships was announced with regret on Wednesday by the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones. Four were also injured. The casualties are as follows: — KILLED. Allen, George Edmund Mantle, able seaman; Mrs I. Y. Allen, 16 Alison Avenue, Devonport, Auckland (w). Scoullar, Patrick Emmett, able seaman; Mrs G. K. Scoullar, 24 Izard Road, Khandallah, Wellington (m). Simpson, lan Keith, able seaman; Mrs M._ Simpson, 49 Cam Road, Kaiapoi, Canterbury (m). West, Harry John, able seaman; Mrs I. M. West, 268 North Road, Kaiapoi, Canterbury (m). INJURED. Casey, Rex, lieutenant, R.N.Z.V.R., minor injuries; Mrs J. B. Casey, 41 Calliope Road, Devonport, Auckland (w). Sherwood, Sidney Douglas, able seaman, critically injured; Mrs M. Sherwood, 2 Baden Road, Kilbirnie, Wellington (m). Bassett, Frederick Cyril, able seaman, seriously injured; Mrs H. Bassett, Woodlands Road, Glen Eden, Auckland (m). Elliot, George Coombe, able seaman, minor injuries; Mrs F. J. Elliot, C/o A. L. Bain, Senr., Waikari Road, Dunedin (w). An inquest into the deaths of the four men killed was opened on Wednesday morning by Mr F. K. Hunt, city coroner, Auckland. Evidence of identification was given by lan Clendon Howard, lieutenant, R.N.Z.V.R. An inquiry is being held into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
