COLLISION IN AIR
TWO MACHINES CRASH FOUR MEN KILLED INSTANTLY. ACCIDENT NEAR REN WICKTOWN. (By Telegraph—Press? Association. I WELLINGTON. This Day. Four members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force were killed on Wednesday morning when two aircraft collided in mid-air one mile northwest of Woodbourne. Those killed were: — Coxon, Matthew, William, sergeant; Mrs Margaret Coxon, 18 Weld Street, Blenheim. Hewett, James Duff, leading aircraftman; Mrs Joan Hewett, 132 ■ Onepu Road, Kilbirnie, Wellington (w). Hildreth, Charles William, leading aircraftman; Mrs Audrey Hildreth, 36 The Parade, Island Bay, Wellington (w). Claris, Gordon Keith, leading aircraftman; Mrs Zona Claris, 152 Hataitai Road, Wellington (w). L.A.C. Hewett was the son of Squadron Leader J. D. Hewett, R.N.Z.A.F. One aircraft, occupied by Sergeant Coxon and L.A.C. Hewett, had been practising instrumental take-offs and was returning to the aerodrome when it became involved in a collision with the second aircraft in which L.A.C. Hildreth and L.A.C. Claris were engaged in camera-gun practice.
Both machines crashed near Renwicktown, being completely wrecked. The occupants were killed instantly.
Leading Aircraftman Claris was formerly teacher at Matahiwi, where he was in charge of the school for some eighteen months.
