BOROUGH AFFAIRS
MEETING OF COUNCIL. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Borough Council was held last night when there were present: The Mayor, Mr W. Olsen, Councillors R. B. Gallagher, M. W. Priest, D. D. Ryan, E. M. Simmers, K. D. Marenzi and P. S. Page. The Clerk, Mr B. Dinnan, reported on the borough’s finances as follows: District Fund Account, dr. £9BB 18s 2d; Domain Account, cr. £7 3s lid; rate arrears, £331 3s 9a; library arrears, £1 2s 6d; cemetery arrears, £9 13s.
; Accounts amounting to £246 17s 2d were passed 'for payment. In the course of his monthly report the Foreman said that it was evident that vandalism was taking place at the children’s playground, resulting in damage to one of the swings. The Mayor said that the Council must take drastic steps to put a stop to damage to the playground appointments by irresponsible persons and he suggested that prosecution be instituted against offenders. The Council agreed that this course, be taken, and the police are io ”oe asked to co-operate in the matter. A serious view was taken of the inaction of several residents in the matter of the cutting of noxious weeds on their properties. The Foreman was instructed to re-inspect properties dining the next month with a view to. prosecuting offenders for non-compli-ance with the by-law. The District Engineer of the Post and Telegraph Department wrote advising that a public telephone would be erected in the Main Street as soon as the necessary labour and material were available. The Fire Brigade wrote asking for its half-yearly grant. The request was acceded to.
