AIMS IN EDUCATION
RECOGNITION OF VALUES NEEDED IMPORTANCE OF RELIGION, ADDRESS BY ARCHDEACON BULLOCK. Reverence for human life is something which has been lost by the German people. It has been filched by a horrible system which has brought the world to its present pass,” said the Venerable Archdeacon W. Bullock, of Wellington, in addressing a large gathering on the broader conceptions of education at the break-up ceremony in connection with St. Matthew’s Collegiate School for Girls in Masterton last night. He emphasised throughout his address the necessity for learning the true values of life through religion. Archdeacon Bullock contrasted the life of Frederick the Great with that cf the famous composer, John Sebastion Bach, stating that Hitler’s god, if he had one, was Frederick the Great. What caused one man to bring, about a system which caused so much loss of life, grief and waste, while another brought so much joy to the world through music? The Archdeacon considered that it was due to something missing in certain systems of education. He emphasised that there were three necessary ingredients in education. They were vocational social and spiritual. The first, he said, filled the needs of those going into trades and professions. When launching out in life the second was required. Archdeacon Bullock stressed the value of games, etc., in that direction. Referring to spiritual education he said that it taught the true values in living. In conclusion he stressed the need of a true conception of Christianity in order to furnish true education.
