Tomorrow afternoon his Excellency the Governor-General will leave Wellington for Auckland, and will return to Wellington on Sunday morning next. Word has been received in Masterton that Private A. E. Friend is safe and well in Egypt. Mr and Mrs J. R. Carswell, Matahiwi, have received word that their son, Gunner Ken Carswell, is safe and well in the Middle East. Dr. A. W. H. West, acting-headmaster of John McGlashan College, Dunedin, has retired to return to university work. He will be succeeded by Mr T. ;S. Holme, head of the primary department. The death occurred recently at Invercargill of Mr Reginald G. Hallimore, at the age of 68 years. He was well known, not only in Southland, but in nearly every province in New Zealand, for fie was a prominent cricketer and footballer, besides taking an active part in other sports. When on the staff of the New Zealand Shipping Company he was stationed in different towns" in both North and South Islands.
