CARTERTON BOROUGH
MEETING OF COUNCIL CHLORINATION PLANT TO BE INSTALLED. WATER RESTRICTIONS WILL BE ENFORCED. ("Times-Age” Special.) Mr D. L. Taverner (Mayor) presided over the monthly, meeting of the Carterton Borough Council last evening. There were also present Crs. E. McKenzie, W. A. Hart, W. R. Harry, H. Mortensen, C. J. DeLacey, H. E. Jackson, Miss O. W. Wolters, and the Town Clerk (Mr P. A. Cole). Apologies for absence Were received from Crs. L. M. Clark and C. E. Stevens. Prior to the commencement of business the Mayor welcomed back to the Council table Cr. W. R. Harry after his illness. Cr. Harry thanked the Mayor for his good wishes and the Councillors for the letter of sympathy sent to him.
The firm concerned wrote stating that the work of erecting the chlorination plant would be put in hand immediately. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Wolters, the Wairarapa P. and A. Society was granted a rebate of £5 on their water rate. The Masterton Picture and Entertainment Company were granted permission to remove conduits and wiring from the State Theatre, the company to be liable for any damage to the building. Mr J. Grant, of Taylor Street, was appointed dog tax collector. The Boy Scouts were granted the use of Carrington Park on December 20 for Scout manoeuvres. The Works Committee reported that it decided that the clerk approach the State Advances Corporation of New Zealand and also Mrs Pitcher with a view to obtaining their assistance in laying out a new road between Broadway and Pembroke Street. The land required for widening purposes is approximately 24 feet. The Gas Committee recommended that a bonus be granted to the Gas Manager, Mr A. Ingley. The committee expressed appreciation of the services rendered by Mr Ingley and his staff during the year. It was decided that the water restrictions be strictly enforced and that an inspector be appointed in this connection. Action is to be taken against those breaking the regulations. It was resolved that a 10 per cent penalty be imposed on all rates not paid by February 15. J It was decided that the Borough Office be closed on December 23 and reopened on Monday, January 5. The Mayor extended the season’s greetings to the Councillors, the Town Clerk, Miss Newbould, and the Borough Overseer and his staff. Cr. McKenzie (Deputy Mayor) replied on behalf of the Councillors and the Clerk for the office and the outside staffs.
