GREYTOWN

ANNUAL PRIZE-GIVING

METHODIST SUNDAY SCHOOL.

(“Times-Age” Special.) At the annual prize-giving of the Methodist Sunday School, the Rev. L. A. D. Hayman referred to the encouraging work of the Sunday School and stressed the importance of co-opera-tion. He presented the prizes and certificates won by scholars in the Wellington Sunday School Union examinations. He handed a copy of “Moffatt s translation of the Bible,” presented by Mr W. A< Tate, to Hazel Farrell, who gained top marks in her grade in this examination. Special prizes were given by Mrs Langford for crayon expression work to V erna Amundsen, Margaret Maloney, Jimmy and Graham Farley. Mrs Sadler presented special prizes for tablet work to Doreen Fai roll, Hazel Farrell, Ray Ross and Campbell Ross, each receiving a 5s National Savings Bond. Miss Wilson presented Jim Farrell and Graham Farley with special prizes for having recorded full attendances for the year. The Superintendent, Mr M. J. Greathead, reported on the work of the year. ~ n The following gained attendance prizes:—Doreen Farrell, Fay Ross, Hazel Farrell, Lorraine Sugrue, Nadun Sugrue, Phyllis Higgison, Verna Amundsen, Isobel Edwards, Alice Marunui, Betty Ah Kit, June Nichols, Margaret Maloney, Maragret Edwards, Campbell Ross, Warren Nichols, Alan Peterson, Graham Brazendale, C. Higgison, G. Farmer, R. Farmer, N. Farmer, J. Farley, Ross AVhimp, Ross Sugrue, Graham Farley, John Higgison, Jack Sugrue, Peter Ah Kit, Noleen Peterson, P. Maloney, P. Barcham, M. Higgison, Joan Amundsen, Florence Heapy, Mary Heapy, Minnie Heapy, Maureen Farmer, J. Farmer, Susie Hume,. Francis Higgison, G. Heapy, Gladys Edwards, Shona Brown, R. Ming, Bevis Sugrue, Marise Olsen, Brian Farley, and Jean Olliver. In appreciation of their loyal attendance at Bible Class, Raeburn Gray, Roy Amundsen, Nola Brazendale, Doris Amundsen and Perry Peterson were each presented with a book.

ST. LUKE’S CHURCH

ANNUAL TEA MEETING. At the Parish Hall the annual tea meeting and prize-giving in connection with St. Luke’s Sunday School was held. Father Christmas presented prizes to the juniors. The prizes for the senior classes were presented by the Rev. Canon Sykes. On behalf of the senior girls, Mrs Shedden presented Mrs Sykes and Miss Sykes with a small token of appreciation of the services given by them. Mrs Sykes and Mrs Shedden were the recipients of floral posies from the senior girls, Miss Mary Carter making the presentation. The Rev. Canon. Sykes then handed presents to the following Sunday School teachers: Mrs Balfour, Mrs A. Nicholls, Mrs J. Bull and Mrs Shedden. Canon Sykes announced to the children the amount collected from their mission boxes,, and thanked them foi their support. Before the children dispersed cheers were given for Canon and Mrs Sykes and family. Bowling. In the final game for the Campbell Cup, B. Kiernan defeated A. G. Peterson. 1 _ Champion pairs. J. Burden and J. Kiernan beat E. Skeet and H. B. Wailace. Champion singles, Skeet beat Burden, Higgison beat Reid, Shedden beat Maddison. . In the progressive pairs the winning skip was T. Connolly with 5 wins, and the winning" lead H. J. Nightingale with 41- wins. The second prizes were obtained by W. Higgison (skip) and B. Kiernan (lead). The hidden numbers were won by H. W. Feast and G. Bums. Soldiers Entertained. There was a large gathering at the Odd Hall when the Greytown Citizen’s Patriotic Committee entertained Private M. McKenzie, J. Hood and Roband. The Mayor, Mr A. W. Horton, extended good wishes to the soldiers from the citizens. Mr J. F. Thompson spoke on behalf of the Sports Bodies and Mr H. G. Carter for the Returned Soldiers. The Mayoress, Mrs A. W. Horton, presented a diary and fountain pen to each soldier, and on behalf of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, Mrs Alex Johnson handed them gifts of woollen goods. Mri S. C. Shedden acted as M.C. and Te Tau’s orchestra supplied the music. The Monte Carlo was won by Mr B. Burch and partner. The supper arrangements were in the capable hands of the ladies’ committee. ! Personal. Mr A. G. Carter returned to his home from the Wellington Training College on Friday and left on Saturday to join his Territorial Artillery unit.

TOWN HALL TOMORROW'S PROGRAMME. The sunniest and most cheerful entertainment, it has been the privilege of the management to present this season is Joel McCrea and Ellen Drew in “Reaching for the Sun,” with Billy Gilbert. It is a rollicking romance of two happy-go-lucky kids. (Approved for Universal Exhibition).
