BOWLING CLUB

CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITIONS

(“Times-Age” Special.) On Saturday the local bowling green played well and some interesting games were witnessed. The afternoon tea arrangements were suprevised by Mrs W. Sorensen and Miss Avis Sorensen, to whom a hearty vote of thanks was accorded. The results of

the games were as follow: —Champion K. k \ rink: Foster, Boden, Bain, Stent (s) -A beat A. Thompson (sub), Booth. Simmonds (sub), Riggs (s) 25/12; Smith, Compton, R. Thompson, Harrington (s) beat Colson, McCarty, Harris, Larsen (s) 30/13. Other games resulted as follows: — Beaven, Carson, Curtis, Barr (s) beat Adams, DeLacey, Whyte, Barber (s) 24/23; Daysh, AV. Steven, Newbould, Martin (s) beat Irwin, Tomlin, Underhill, Tucker (s) 28/19; Kilmister, W. Hart, Hughan, G. Hart (s) drew with . Clark, G. Steven, Sorensen, Harp (s) 18/18. There was a good attendance of lady players on Saturday, the greens playing well. Several interesting matches were contested and an enjoyable time was spent. Club competitions are being arranged. Arrangements are being made for a tournament to be held on the Carterton green during the Christmas and New Year holidays. Tennis. The Carterton tennis courts were well patronised on Saturday.- Several new players are showing good form. Hay Harvest. Hay making throughout the Carterton district is in full swing. Some very heavy crops are being harvested and there should be no shortage of winter feed. Suitable labour is difficult to obtain. Swimming Baths. A favourite spot in Carterton during the present hot weather is the swimming baths in Pembroke Street, and they are being well patronised.

Wairarapa South County Council. The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council will be held on Thursday next.

Home Guard.

The B Company held an all-day parade yesterday. The company proceeded by convoy to the Papawai rifle range, where over 80 members engaged in firing exercises. The convoy vehicles were provided by the Lines of Communication Company, the drivers being under the leadership of Sgt. McFarlane. I Guardsmen took their lunches, but a \ most welcome supply of tea was pro- ' vided both at mid-day and again in the afternoon by members of the Carterton Ladies’ Patriotic Committee, in charge of Miss O. W. Wolters. A very marked improvement in the shooting was shown in the afternoon practice.

, Soldier Entertained. Clareville Social Hall on Saturday night was filled when a social gathering was tendered to Signalman D. McKenzie, of Clareville. Music for the dancing was supplied by Mrs. Rogers, of Dalefield, and extras were played by Messrs M. and J. Edwards. Mr L. Humphries was M.C. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mesdames Stretton and Couper. During the evening Mr H. J. McKenzie, on behalf of the residents of the Clareville district, presented Signalman McKenzie with a writing case.

Signalman McKenzie suitably returned thanks.

King’s Birthday.

The New Zealand ensign is being flown from the Carterton Post Office today in honour of the King’s Birthday.

Personal, Mr C. Billman, of Auckland, is ,a visitor to Carterton. REGENT THEATRE TONIGHT’S PROGRAMME. “New Moon,” the most colourful production yet flashed across the silver screen, features those singing sweethearts, Nelson Eddy and Jeanette McDonald. Song and romance are magnificently combined in this picture. (Approved for Universal Exhibition).
