CROQUET CLUB OPENING OF SEASON. (“Times-Age” Special.) The official opening of the season of the Grey town Ladies’ Croquet Chib was held on Saturday afternoon. Mrs H. G. Carter (president), welcomed the members and honorary members. Miss Udy (patroness of the club) played the ball through the first hoop and in a few well chosen words declared the greens open for play. A French competition took place on the green and then play was brought to a termination owing to rain. Members and their visitors then retired to the pavilion and spent a pleasant time in competitions and afternoon tea. The competition winners were: French, Miss Stephens and Mrs Brunton; croauet, Mrs W. Pope; pairs, Miss Stephens. A feature of the gathering was a Christmas mystery parcel handed to each person present. TENNIS CLUB SEASON OPENED ON SATURDAY. The official opening of the season by the Greytown Memorial Park Tennis Club took place on Saturday afternoon, but play was brought to a close by the heavy rain which set in. BOWLING CLUB • SOME SURPRISES. A start was made on Saturday afternoon with handicap singles. Unfortunately, rain commenced to fall and play was suspended. There were several surprises. Results: —B. Kiernan beat S. Shedden, A. G. Peterson beat F. Dennes, E. Maddison beat J. Stringfellow, T. Connolly beat J. Reid, J. Coleman beat W. Higgison, G. Brunton beat E. Skeet, H. R. Feast beat J. Grady Medals: The Carterton Club has extended a challenge for the Grady Medals, and the game will be played on Tuesday. Patriotic Committee. At a meeting of the Greytown Citizens’ Patriotic Committee the mayor (Mr A. W. Horton) presided. The balance sheet of the recent entertaininent organised by Mrs J. F. Thompson and Miss Keddell was presented, showing a credit of £26 19s Bd. It was resolved to write to the organisers thanking them for their splendid effort. A parcel will be sent this month to every soldier on the, committee’s list, and will contain two tins of tobacco, two packets of cigarette papers, barley sugar, chewing gum, razor blades, coffee and milk, lamb and green peas. Arrangements were made to assist in the supply of parcels to prisoners of war. It was arranged to give a reception to Mr William Jordan on Friday next. November 14. Donations to the parcel fund are acknowledged from the Secondary pupils of the Greytown District High School 10, and Mrs J. Wood, Senr., 10s. Competition Result. Tire members of the traffic section of South Wairarapa Home Guard have been taking a course of St. John ambulance work. In order to secure the necessary equipment they conducted a raffle for a set of hand pointed table mats. The drawing took place at the Town Hall, Greytown, on Saturday evening, the winner being E. Rippy. Personal Items. The friends of Mrs J. M. Jackson will be pleased to hear that she has recovered from her recent operation and will leave the hospital early this week. Trooper R. Eccles, of the Foxton Camp, is at present home on sick leave. Nurse Phyllis Olliver, of Wellington, visited her parents, Mr and Mrs E. Olliver, Humphries Street, at the weekend.
Mr and Mrs J. Stephenson, of Lower Hutt, were the guests of Mr and Mrs C. G. Bouzaid, Main Street, at the weekend.
Miss Nancy Haigh, of Lower Hutt, is spending a holiday with her parents, Mr and Mrs E. Haigh, Main Street. Mr A. G. Carter, Wellington, spent the weekend with his parents, Mr and Mrs H. G. Carter, McMaster Street.
