BRINDISI BLASTED

BOMBED FOR THREE HOURS ON SATURDAY TWENTY FIRES STARTED. BIG AIRCRAFT FACTORY LEFT ABLAZE. LONDON, November 9. For three hours on Saturday morning, Brindisi, the Italian port on the Adriatic, was bombed by British aircraft. Twenty fires were started and a big aircraft factory was left ablaze. R.A.F. REPORT MEDITERRANEAN AND LIBYAN RAIDS. . (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.20 a.m.) RUGBY, November 9. A R.A.F. Middle East communique states: “R.A.F. bombers yesterday carried out a daylight raid on Benghazi harbour, and although the target was obscured by heavy cloud, many bombs were dropped in the vicinity of the Cathedral Mole. The attack followed a raid on the harbour by our bombers on the night of November 7-8, when Bardia and motor transport and stores near Solium were also attacked. South African Air Force Maryland bombers were again in action yester-

day, when objectives at Benina were raided. “In the central Mediterranean our bombers yesterday attacked an enemy convoy. One of the merchantmen sustained a direct hit, and was left low in the water. In a second attack our pilots observed that this ship had been abandoned by her crew, who were seen in lifeboats. An escorting destroyer and another merchantman were effectively machine-gunned, as well as a number of enemy positions. “From these and other operations, three of our planes are missing.”
