PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH CALEDONIAN FAIR. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Caledonian Fair held yesterday in the Band Room to raise money for ' the Carterton parish of the Presbyter--7 ian Church was very successful. The proceds amounted to £145. In his remarks at the opening of the Fair, the . Rev. W. J. Codling said he had great pleasure in announcing that ah envelope containing £66 15s 9d was being handed over from the Gladstone- * Longbush parishioners as their contribution. This had been raised from a stock drive and was in lieu of their usual stall. The various stalls: Meat and produce, West Taratahi; work, novelties, cakes, flowers, sweets, were in charge of a busy band of workers who did good business all day. The lunch rdoms were in charge of the Carterton church ladies, and the afternoon tea, , uhder the control of the West Taratahi, Gladstone and Longbush ladies. The flower stall was assisted by the work of the 4-year-old twins of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Reynolds. Little ’Margaret had a tray of buttonholes with a pin for each, and John a tiny billy for the cash. No one could refuse and they sold £1 Is 6d worth of buttonholes. The cake competition winners were: Shortbread, Mrs G. Brown; plain sponge, Mrs W. Linton; chocolate cake, Mrs W. Gregor; sultana cake, Mrs R. H. Every; plain gems, Mrs W. Martin; plate of sweets, Mrs H. T. Leete; pot of marmalade, Mrs F. G. Bath. Mrs E. W. Allen, West Taratahi, was the judge. She was presented with a beautiful spray of flowers. ARMISTICE DAY RETURNED SOLDIERS TO PARADE ° On Tuesday morning next members of the Carterton branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association will parade for the purpose of placing a wreath on the Soldiers’ Memorial ih the Square, Carterton. A two-minute silence will be observed.
f DANCE AT BELVEDERE MR. & MRS H. TORREY FAREWfeLLED. There was a very large attendance at the Belvedere School last evening when a patriotic dance was held, the proceeds from which will be devoted to the soldier comforts fund. Excellent music was provided by Mrs Rogers, Dalefield, . extras being played by Messrs Hemi and C. Bell. Mr A. E. Reid was an efficient M.C. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr T. Catt and Miss Conwell, and a spot waltz by Mr Duffy and Miss E. Waterson. Mr A. H. Callister, chairman of Directors of the Bfelvddere Dairy Factory on behalf of the .suppliers to the factory referred to the departure of their first assistant, Mr H. Torrey, who had accepted a position with a privatelyowned cheese factory at Linton, would leave Carterton next week. Mr Torrey had been a faithful employee of the company over a period of nine years. Mr Callister asked Mr Torrey to accept a wristlet watch suitably engraved, and Mrs Torrey an electric hot water jug. Mr Torrey suitably returned thanks. ENGAGEMENT WALKER—HEDLEY. The engagement is announced of Marjorie, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs E. Hedley, Kent Street, Carterton, to Allan Gordon, youngest son of Mr and Mrs W. Walker, “The Oaks,” New South Wales, Australia. Kokotaii’s War Effort. correspondent has forwarded the /“wildwihg to the Carterton representative of the “Times-Age”:—“Kokotau’s war effort is outstanding. There are only eight suppliers to the cheese factory and the average quantity of milk supplies is 25401b5. daily. In addition the suppliers are rearing 178 heifer calves and a large number of pigs. At present farmers, are busy sowing mangolds and potatoes. So prolific has been the growth of grass during the spring that harvesting of hay will commence' towards the end of the present month. For its size the Kokotau factory has the largest supply of milk per supplier of any factory in New Zealand.”
