CROQUET CLUB SEASON OPENED. (“Times-Age” Special.) ' The season of the Mauriceville Croquet Club, was officially opened by the club captain, Mrs J. W. Milner, who welcomed members and visitors. She expressed the hope that the club members would experience a pleasant and successful season. The president, Mrs J. E. McKeown, presented the following with trophies won during the afternoon: —Mesdames H. Trass (golf),.Broadbent (hoops), H. Trass (angles), and J. E. McKeown (peg). Refreshments were provided in the club pavilion, and were greatly appreciated. RED CROSS SOCIETY SUCCESSFUL SHOP DAY. The local Red Cross Society held a successful shop day on Thursday. The bulk of the articles were worked and sewn by the ladies of the local Red Cross Society, and their efforts should be appreciated by hospitals and othei’ services to which they will be forwarded. The work of a very capable band of assistants was much appreciated.
The shop will be held every Thursday afternoon and the Mauriceville sub-centre of the Red Cross Society would welcome donations for the stalls. Contributions can be left with the secretary, Mrs J. A. Baine, during the week, or at the Red Cross Society’s shop on Thursday afternoons. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The monthly meeting of the local women’s Institute was held at the residence of Mrs F. Pain. Mrs O. Nikolaisen presided, the president being absent on V.A.D. duties at a military hospital. Mrs King reported on the recent council meeting held at Carterton in October. A supply of navy blue wool was distributed for the purpose of making pullovers for the Mercantile Marine. Competitions were won as follows: — “Social hour,” Mrs T. D. Cameron; best bloom, Miss J. Larsen, 1; Mrs Nikolaisen, 2; Mrs J. Wilson, 3. Most effective jug cover: Mrs J. Baine, 1; Mrs Broadbent, 2; Mrs G. Wilson, 3. The sum of 10s 9d was taken at the bring-and-buy stall. The shilling contribution for soldiers’ parcels is now due. Members are expected to plant three seed potatoes for the current season’s competition. Afternoon tea was provided, and the hostesses, Mesdames F. Pain and R. Neilson, were accorded a vote of thanks.Personal Items. Gunner Gray, who recently returned from overseas, is at present the guest of Mr and Mrs F. Tildesley. Mrs R. Kerr, of Dannevirko, has been staying with her mother, Mrs A. Goodgame.
