GREAT COLT

SKIPTON’S DOUBLE WIN INTERFERENCE WITH BEAU VITE. PROBABLY COST HIM SECOND PLACE. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.10 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The “Herald’s” Melbourne correspondent says Skipton completed the Victoria Derby and the Melbourne Cup double in the manner of a great colt. There was not the semblance of a fluke about the performance. Ho came from the real’ of the field with a powerful run, to win very easily. Skipton’s win is a tribute to the skill of the trainer, J. Fryer, who' experienced trouble with the colt during the past few weeks. Though the time is 2| seconds outside Wotan’s record for the race, the pace was solid and Skipton’s finishing run to beat the lightlyweighted Son of Aurous was evidence of real stamina. • Son of Aurous spoiled his chance by pulling hard. Beau Vite, with his big weight, was responsible for a sterling effort and,"but for meeting ‘with interference about five furlongs from the winning post, would have troubled Skipton. Beau Vite was galloping beautifully at the five furlongs post, when his head was seen to go up in the air and he lost ground. Probably when he recovered he was not balanced with his big impost. The “Telegraph’s” Melbourne correspondent says that as the Cup was run in pouring rain, Skipton’s runaway win in 3min 23.? sec was a great performance.

The jockey, Cook, said he considered Skipton the best stayer he had ever ridden in any race. Munro said: “From the way Skipton finished, nothing could have beaten him/ but Beau Vite probably would have been second but for interference.”
