GREYTOWN

ST. LUKE’S CHURCH HALLOW-E’EN FAIR. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Hallow-e’en Fair organised by the Ladies’ Guild of St. Luke’s Anglican Church was held in the Crown Theatre on Friday afternoon and evening, and proved most successful, the takings .amounting to over £B6. In opening the Fair, Canon Sykes especially thanked the Ladies’ Guild for their untiring efforts in the interests of the church. The following were the stall-holders: —Sewing: Mesdames Sykes, Smallwood, Carter and Miss Stephens; surprise packets, Mesdames Wood, Barcharn and Dewhurst; cakes, Mesdames York, Burch, Rees, Tully; produce, Mesdames Davis, Maxton and Morgan; sweets, Mesdames Shedden, O’Neale, Everett and A. Nichols; flowers, Mrs •Balfour and Misses Oates and Collier; ice cream, Mrs Burns and Miss G. Gray; tea rooms, Mesdames Blissett, Benseman, Vinsen and Miss Tate; hoop-la, Misses M. Sykes, L. Gray and Mr K. Trotman; ■ art gallery, Misses Wood, Judd and Shedden; Dame Fortune, Mrs Dennes; nail-driving, Mr A. D. Burch; darts, Mr R. C. O’Neale; billiards, Mr S. C. Shedden. During the evening a. half-hour entertainment was given, which had been organised by Miss C. Keddell. In the verse-speaking, those taking part were: Joy O’Neale, Lloma Jordan, -Judith York, Shirley Olsen, Miriam Gayler, Dulcie Rodgers, Lena Hay, Lifida Nichols, Margaret Edwards, Janet Workman, Kay Flood and Isabel Edwards. The items were “Crabapples” and “Up the Airy Mountains.” Other items on the programme were:, Highland dance, Beth Stuart; recitation, Miss C. Keddell, “The Kings Daughter” and “Little Orphan Annie;” the witch scene from Macbeth was well acted by Mesdames J. F. Thompson, Vinsen and Miss Wood; Gipsy dance, by Beverley McCarthy, Lorraine Sugrue, Nadine Sugrue, and Betty McGregor. No raffles or competitions were held.BOWLING CLUB OPENING OF SEASON. The official opening for the season of the Greytown Bowling Club’s green was held on Saturday afternoon. The weather conditions were perfect and the green although heavy, was in good order. In declaring the season open the president, Mr G. Burns, expressed the hope that bowlers would experience a happy season. Mr Burns specially commended Messrs J. Burden and W. Higgison for the work they had done during the winter months . The president of the Centre, Mr G. Hayne, expressed his pleasure at being present, and wished the club every success. All present stood in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect to members who had died during the past year. Mr H. B. Thomas, of Masterton, sent a telegram conveying good wishes and expressing regret that he was unable to be present. The following were the results of games played: —Park (Kilgour, Shearer, Thompson, Carr) beat Greytown (Peterson, Brown, Shedden, Higgison), 23/17. Centre official rink (Stent, Russell, Hayne and Smith) beat Greytown (Skeet, Burden, Kilgour, Burns), 23/22. Carterton (Barr, DeLacey, Harris, Barber) beat Greytown'(Reid, Maddison, Brunton, McLeod), 37/16. Greytown (Wallace, Coleman, Stringfellow, Kenning) lost to (H. R. Feast, B. Kiernan, ,J. Kiernan, F. Dennes), 14/27. In the first game of the season for the Dennes Medal, the holder, H. B. .Wallace, beat J. Reid, by a narrow margin. Home Guard. Forty-five officers and n.c.o’s. of the Lower Valley portion of the South Wairarapa Home Guard ' Battalion spent the weekend at Featherston, under the area instructors. LieutenantColonel Birch, M.C., Group Director, and Major H. G. Carter, Battalion Commander, paid a visit to watch the proceedings. Instruction courses will be held at Carterton on November 29 and 30, and at Martinborough on December 6 and 7th.
