CARTERTON
TENNIS CLUB SEASON OFFICIALLY OPENED. ("Times-Age” Special.) Mr R. W. Roydhouse, president of the Carterton Tennis Club, on Saturday officially opened the courts for play for the season. The whole of the courts weue occupied and many enjoyable were played. Several young players took part. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE ENJOYABLE DANCE AT PARKVALE. There was a large attendance at the Parkvale Hall on Saturday night when a dance and card party was held by the Parkvale Women’s Institute. The proceeds will go towards, the purchase of wool with which to knit garments for soldiers. Mr D. Jensen made an efficient M.C. The music was supplied by Mrs: V. J. Ashton’s Orchestra. Much appreciated extras were contributed by Miss V. Sorensen, Mrs Teal, and Messrs Hemi and Morris. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mrs Wright, and a spot waltz by Mr Ingley and Mrs Teal. The winners at cards were: —Ladies: Mrs D. Adams; men, W. Anderson. The consolation prizes went to Miss D. Jensen and A. H. Elkins. Supper was provided. BOWLING VISITS TO GREYTOWN AND EKETAHUNA On Saturday a rink from the Carterton Club was present at the official opening of the season by the Greytown Club, and another rink journeyed to Eketahuna for the northern club's opening day. Both greens played well and an enjoyable time was spent. Twenty-eight members of the local club engaged in play on the Carterton green on Saturday afternoon. A new method in providing afternoon tea was instituted and worked very well, being presided over by Mrs Stubbs and Sister Sutherland, who were accorded a hearty vpte of thanks. The green played weir although it was a trifle on the heavy side. The scores were as follow:—H. Rayner, Beaven, Curtis, Hughan (s) beat Boden, Dudson, Newbould, Tucker (s), 18/15; Clarke, Henderson, Pankhurst, Sorensen (s) beat Booth, Billington, Payne, G. Hart (s), 17/16; McCarty, Kilmister, Riggs (s) beat Colson, Smith, Callender (s), 22/12; G. Steven, W. Hart, Martin (s) beat Daysh, Bain, Harp (s)', 22/19. There was a good attendance of lady members on their green on Saturday when interesting games were played. The players included several recruits. ORDER OF RECHABITES ANNUAL CONFERENCE. At the.annual conference of the Wellington ProVinjcial' (Council delegates were present from the Wellington and Hutt Valley Tents. Masterton and Carterton were represented by Sister J. Walker and Sister M. A. Haste. _ The Provincial Chief Ruler, Bro. William L. Haste, welcomed the delegates, and referred to the death of Bro. W. M. Jeffery, who had been a Tent secretary for over 20 years, and also the District Treasurer, and District Proxy. Members stood in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect to his memory. The Juvenile Superintendent, Bro. H. Goodhall, reported that a new Tent had been opened at Lower Hutt with 61 members. This Tent had a very enthusiastic superintendent, Bro. G. W. Foster. The Carterton Tent was asked to allow this new Juvenile Tent the use of its banner. The new provincial officers were installed by P.P.C.R. Bro. H. Goodhall. Bro. Chadburn, of the Kilbirnie Tent, is the new Provincial Chief Ruler. Rainfall at Carrington. Mr Ji A. Roberts, of Carrington, reports that the rainfall at Carrington in October was 7.36 inches, it having been the wettest October for the past 3 years. There were twenty wet days and the heaviest fall was 1.31 inches on October 10. In October, 1940, 6.16 inches of rain were registered. Sitting of S.M. Court. The monthly sitting of the Carterton Magistrate’s Court will be held on Wednesday. Serious Charge. A local resident was arrested by the Carterton police on Saturday night after a dance at Parkvale on an indecent assault charge. Accused later came before Messrs W. M. C. Sorensen and P. A. Cole, J.sP., and after formal evidence had been heard he was remanded till November 5, bail being fixed at £2OO. Bride-to-be Honoured. The Clareville hall was well filled onSaturday evening when a "parcel evening” was tendered to Miss Eileen Taylforth. of Carterton, who is to be married next Saturday to Leading Aircraftman C. C. Deller. Those present included residents of Clareville and surrounding districts and Greytown and Masterton. During the evening Mr E. S. Rayner asked Miss Taylforth to accept and open the many parcels. He wished her the best of health and happiness for the future. Mr J. Taylforth, on his daughter’s behalf, thanked those present for the many useful gifts and the good wishes, conveyed.
