OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS

KOWHAI BLOOM (To the Editor.) Sir,—New Zealand's well-chosen floral emblem, the kowhai, may now be seen gracing not a few of Masterton’s pretty garden plots. Some botanists aver that at least fifty distinct varieties of kowhai can be come across in one part and another of this Dominion. Be this as it may, the writer's most charming—if only for sentimental reasons—discovery was the kowhai found near a cliffside burial ground not far from town and under whose tasselated shade he wrote, in remembrance of hisfirst visit to these parts, the following verse-passage: The tangled growth of years long undisturbed Weaves fantastic shroud to hide tire dead; All are, by name, long-years forgot Who rest in peace in this, still-sacred plot. /Trusting the said most beauteous kW’hai still blooms on the cliffside, overlooking the ancient sites of also name-forgotten pahs,—l am, etc., N.J.B. Masterton, October 23.
