AVERTING BARBARISM
I was amused to hear writes Dr. W. R. Inge, that the Russian broadcast announced “The English have a song, ‘Britons never shall be slaves.’ This is a sentiment which finds an echo in the heart of every Russian.” No; the threatened reversion to barbarism can only be averted if someone can say in a voice that will be listened to, ‘Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?’ We cannot repudiate all that we owe to Palestine and to Athens, the living faith of two thousand years.
