FIRMING THE SOIL. Firmness of root run is an important factor in securing sturdy growth. When seeds of green crops are sown in soft newly-turned soil, they grow fairly well if weather Conditions are good, yet they grow leggy and do not “heart up” so quickly as plants in firm, well-settled ground. If the weather "should be dry, the plants in loose soil soon show distress. Firmness is not necessarily hardness; indeed, firm, well-settled soil is usually porous and well aerated. It holds moisture well and gives a solid foundation.
