Mr S. G. Holland, Leader of the Opposition, left Wellington for the south by last night’s steamer express. The death occurred at Palmerston North on Thursday of Mrs Smith, widow of Mi- Thomas Frederick Smith, formerly of Masterton, at the age of 87 years. The Rev.'F. A. Parry, Gisborne, was elected, at the annual assembly of the Baptist Union of New Zealand, vicepresident of the union, an office which carries with it the presidency from the next assembly.
Mr W. E. Brown, of Bentley Street, Masterton, today received a reply to a private cable sent by him on September 23, to the Red Cross Society, Geneva, stating that his son, Driver Norman Brown, is a prisoner of war in Germany, and is unwounded and well. Driver Brown was reported missing from Crete. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Aberdeen Angus Cattle Breeders’ Association at Dannevirke the election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mr J. F. Knight, Palmerston North, re-elected; vicepresidents, Mr A. McGaffin, Elsthorpe. Messrs L. Cowan and J. E. D. Roberts, the retiring members of the council, were re-elected. The death occurred at the Masterton Hospital, yesterday of Mr Edward Brady, of Mangatainoka, at the age of 54 years. The late Mr Brady had been in indifferent health for some time. At one time he conducted a motor garage business in Pahiatua and in later years was engaged in farming at Mangatainoka. He was born in Sheffield, England, and had been in New Zealand for the past 30 years. . He is survived by a widow, a son and a daughter.
