Tennis Opening.

A cordial invitation is extended to all tennis players to attend the opening of the United Lawn Tennis Club which will take place at the Memorial tennis courts on Saturday. October 25, at 2 o’clock. A Yankee tournament will be held. Girl Guide Effort.

A particularly good effort was made by Girl Guides in Masterton in the collection of cotton waste for use at aerodromes in New Zealand. As much as 9501bs was collected locally and this was nearly double the amount collected in other small districts elsewhere in New Zealand.

Presbyterian General Assembly. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand is convened to meet in Timaru on November 4. The retiring Moderator is the Rt Rev G. H. Jupp, Anderson’s Bay, Dunedin, who during his year of office has made a special study of the missionary work of the church among the Maoris and has visited extensively the Maori field. The incoming Moderator is the Rt Rev J. Davie, Masterton, who will preside at all the business sessions of Assembly in Timaru. A final report will be given on the result of the £300,000 Centenary Thanksgiving Fund appeal. Band Concert. The Masterton Municipal Band will play a programme of music in the Park commencing at 2.45 o’clock tomorrow, weather permitting. The programme will be as follows: “Constellation” (march); “Kneller Hall” (march); “The Middy” (march); “The Boys down Under”; “There’ll Always Be An England” (song); “Tommies’ Tunes” (war melody); “Sweet Idleness” (waltz); “Friendship” (fantasia); “The Acrobat” (trombone solo); “Plain and Gwarry” (hymn); “Maori Farewell” (slow waltz); National Anthem.
